Carl Schultz, D.M.A.

Originally a native of the Philadelphia suburbs, Schultz has performed and studied throughout the Northeast completing a Master’s of Music degree at the University of the Arts in 2008, a Bachelor of Music degree from SUNY at Purchase College in 2004, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Colorado Boulder in 2014. This work culminated in his doctoral thesis, The Phenomenological Philosophy of Edmund Husserl as a Paradigm in Jazz Improvisation Performance Practice and Pedagogy and lectures on Pitch Class Sets in Jazz Composition.

In his performing career, Schultz has been a sideman in groups including modern jazz heavyweights Ray Vega, Matt Shulman, Brad Goode, and Art Lande. Schultz has also had the opportunity to perform with jazz legends such as Dave Brubeck, Billy Taylor, and Mickey Roker. Schultz has worked with popular music groups and musicians including Dr. Dog, Lillian Boutte, and Henry Butler, performing at the Celebrate Brooklyn and Concert in the Park festivals as well as After the Flood: From New Orleans with Love. Throughout his education, Schultz has been privileged to study with notable saxophonists including Ben Schachter, Javon Jackson, Ralph Lalama, David Brandom, Norman David, and John Gunther. During 2015, Schultz served as artist in residence at Penn State's Altoona campus and has delivered guest performances and lectures at many universities including Philadelphia’s University of the Arts and Lehigh Valley College. For the next three years, Schultz toured internationally with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, performing over 200 dates per year. After completing the first Trans-Atlantic and European cruises as the Orchestra Woodwind specialist aboard the Celebrity Edge, Schultz decided to return to teaching. Currently, Schultz serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at Santa Clara University.
